Masuhiro Come to Washington
Masuhiro Comes to Washington 4/2001: 
Chie's eldest son, Masuhiro, came to visit in April. He came with his wife, Izumi, and his two sons, Kentaro and Reiju. The photo above is our townhouse in Vienna, VA. From left to right: Shinsuke, Reiju, Masuhiro, Izumi, Kentaro, Kenji and Chie.
今年の四月に Chie の長男益周ご一家が遊びにきました。上の写真はうちのヴィエンナのタウンハウスの前です。三泊でしたが、とってもはやかったです。真典も自分のお兄ちゃんと日本へ帰りました。左から、真典、礼珠、益周、泉、賢太郎、Ken、Chie。
This is a view of our kitchen from the foyer. (I'm not sure it's big enough to call it a foyer).
玄関から、うちの台所の食卓への眺め。食卓の上の扇風機もあります。右のドアはおトイレ。座っているのは、益周、礼珠、泉、賢太郎の背中、うちのKen。
ホワイト・ハウスのすぐそばに、小さな噴水があります。中に、一セント玉やら五セント玉やら十セント玉やら、小銭がたくさん入ってます。おそらく、おのぼりさんが、これは「ウィッシング・ウェル」（願い井戸）とでも思っているのでしょう。しかし、遠くから来た観光客だけじゃないみたいですね。誰だか、当ててみてください。チャンスは、四回だけです。十分だと思うけどぉー。（ところで、左から、Chie、うちのKen、怜珠、賢太郎）
There is a small fountain east of the White House into which tourists have thrown money in the belief it is some kind of wishing well. Guess who also thought it was a wishing well. I'll give you four guesses. From left to right: Chie, Kenji, Reiju, and Kentaro.

花見家にて、ハロウィーン
Halloween at the Hanami House
アメリカのハロウィーンだ！
As everyone in the U.S knows, Halloween starts with carving a pumpkin.
ハロウィーンとは、聖なる（ハロー hallowed）イーブ（イーブニング evening=eve'n）という言葉の省略で、もともと十一月一日のオール・セインツ・デー（全聖人の日）の前の日の夜に、死んだ人の魂が帰ってくる信仰から始まった、とリオが子どもの時から聞いている。
今、アメリカでは、子供がお化けの格好して、人の家に行って、"Trick or treat" （お菓子をくれなかったら、いたずらするぞ！）と叫んで、お菓子をもらいにくる。（なんか積極的だよね。）

 子どもが来るように、ジャコランターン （Jack-o-lantern カボチャの提灯）を飾って呼び寄せるので、まず、カボチャ（パンプキン）を切り刻んで提灯を作る。彫刻まで言わないが、一応芸術ぽく、こわい顔にする。 初めてのハロウィーンだから、みんなが一刻みを入れたい。もちろん、Chie もケンも真典も切ってみたいのだ。どんなにこわい顔になるのだろう。 Of course, Shinsuke has to take a stab as well. |
 ワー、やっぱり日本人だ。なんとなく、歌舞伎ぽくになったみたいね。What's with the face? It sure looks like a Kabuki mask, doesn't it? Well, we are mostly Japanese, I guess..... |
 ケンもカボチャと一緒に写真を撮りたいって。まあ、しようがないか。 Ken take his turn to take a picture with the pumpkin. |
 この写真を見れば、カボチャのモデルは Chie に違いない、と思いませんか。眉毛から口のあたりまで。This photo seems to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that the model for the pumpkin was Chie, no? |
 Okay, okay, Leo confesses. While he kept a low profile, the pumpkin design was his. But it's pretty cool, don't you think? I guess Leo's classical Japanese background kicks in. . . . or something like that. |
 しかし、やっぱり、ハロウィーンの主賓は、お菓子をもらいにくる子どもたちだ. . . . がこんなに大きく、こんなにこわそうな格好してきたら、ムムムム．．．． Of course, the principle characters of Halloween are the kids who come to trick-or-treat. |

Running around the neighborhood.
ノットウェー・パークでランニング
われわれのうちの近くに、ノットウェー・パークという、大きめな公園がある。右は、ベーデン通りを軽くジョギングして、公園へ向かう Chie と Ken。
Chie and Ken jog lightly on Vaden Drive as they head toward Nottoway Park.
Chie と Ken は、ほとんど毎日、ここでランニングをしてくる。
Chie and Ken run here virtually everyday.
フェアーファクス群のノットウェー・パークは、テニスやバスケットやバレーボールの設備を設けている。ピクニックもできる。勿論 Chie と Ken の走るフィットネス・トレール（運動のための遊歩道）もある。
Nottaway Park of Fairfax Count provides facilities for tennis, basketball or volleyball. You can also picnic, work out on the fitness trail, where Chie and Ken are running.
このフィットネス・トレールは、ちょっとした林の中にいたるネーチャー・パース（自然を楽しむための小道）になる。
The fitness trail also turns into a nature path that leads into a small wooded area.
動物を何匹も見当たった。言うまでもなく、りすはどこにでもあるが、野うさぎのピョンピョンも何回見たことがある。Chie は鹿を二三回くらいは見たよ、と主張する。もぐらのようなものも、のそのそ道を渡ったこともあるという。
We have seen a number of animals there. Squirrels are, of course, everywhere, but we have seen rabbits as well. Chie claims to have seen a deer on at least two different occasions, and a gopher/mole shuffling across the trail.
鳥もいっぱい。雀や鳩や 烏だけではない。今度、写真を乗せる。
There are also many birds, including cardinals, orioles, and blue jays.
毎日、こんな自然の中にランニングして、とっても健康的と思いませんか。
しかし、Chie と Ken が奇麗な空気を吸いながらランニングしてるとき、Leo は、見ての通り、地下室で走ってる。
While Chie and Ken are running outside in the fresh air,
Leo runs inside in the basement.
「なんでぇ？」と、聞くかも知れませんけどぉ.... ま、新しい生活に、新しい責任が伴なうので、外で走るより、仕事仕事、とか。（時々、皆と走ってるけど。）去年も今年も、夏期講習も教えているし.... 大学教授の給料はそれほど豪華なものではないし.... ハァ－.... （それなら、ホームページなんか作る暇、どしてあるのか！よく言うよ。）
"Why?" you might ask. Well, with new responsibilities, he has little time to spend outside. Work, work, work. (But they do go running together sometimes.) He's even teaching summer school. A college professor's salary is not the most generous.... Sigh.... (Then, where do you find the time to maintain this homepage?!? Oh, brother. Give me a break.)

4th of July, 2001
アメリカの独立記念日、七月四日
 メトロに乗る Ken。スミソニオン博物館やコンサートや花火大会を見に、ワシントンＤＣのモールへ出かけた。 Ken on the Metro as we head out to the Washington DC Mall where we went to visit the Smithsonian, as well as to see the concert and fireworks scheduled for the 4th. |
 アメリカの本物の独立宣言を見ようと思って、連邦書類館へ足を運んだが、列があまり長くて、残念ながら、やめた。かわりに、向かい側の彫刻園を見に行った。Ken も Chie も聴覚に見える？We went to the National Archives to see the Declaration of Independence, but ther line was too long. So we settled for the Sculpture Garden across the street. |
 その後、スミソニアン博物館へ行った。トリケラトップスの前に、へへ、と笑う Ken。食われるとでも思ってるのだろうか。 We went to the Smithsonian Natural Science Museum. This is Ken in front of the bones of aTriceratop. |
  コンサートの前のくつろぎ。かなり歩いたあと、国会議事堂の前の坂に適当な場所を見つけて、やっとゆっくりくつろげた。 |
Relaxing before the concert: After an afternoon of extensive walking--part of it in the rain--wefound a nice spot on the slopes in front of the Capitol to see the concert.  ステージから遠かったけど、ちゃんと聞こえると思っていた。そこで、Chie のつくったおにぎりを食べて、コンサートを待ちながら、近くのほたるの踊りを楽しんでいた。It was a bit far, but we could hear it well enough. There, we ate the onigiri that Chie made andrelaxed as we waited. We were even entertained by the fireflies dancing in the bushes. |
 しかし、雨が降りはじめた。どしゃぶりだった！はんぱじゃなかったよ。コンサートの最初のほうに出たポインター・シスターズの曲を聞けたが、その他は、あきらめて帰ることにした。 The rain started coming down in buckets! We stayed for the start of the concert and heard thePointer Sisters sing, but gave up and went home. |
  No fireworks for us this year. It was pouring! As you can see, we were drenched. Leo's shirtsleeves were soaked, as well as my pants. The back of Chie's dress was wetter than the front. |
